Gran Canaria is, in my opinion, the most picturesque, scenic and charming of all the Canary Islands. With its abundance of beaches and stunning national park, there is something for everyone at this climate-rich island. During an October visit, we experienced temperatures of around 20/25 degrees day and night, with clear skies most days. Having stayed in an excellent Airbnb right on the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria beach – on the west side of the peninsula – we were well positioned to make the most of the comfortable evening climate in the islands most lively area. However, with a rented car, we were able to easily get out of the main city and tour the island – a trip that stayed with us.
There is no better way to explore Gran Canaria, based on experience, than simply driving around the whole island. Be sure to take a full day, so there is no rush, and make sure to stop off at places such as “Reserva Natural Especial de Las Dunas de Maspalomas” – stunning area of sand dunes close to the sea, the more typical “Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria” beach and the Tamadaba Natural Park which is close the gorgeous coastal town of Ageate. Ultimately, the drive between each of these places is enough to impress any adventurous visitor. One top tip is to drive around the island in a clockwise direction, starting from Las Palmas, because then you finish in Ageate with a sunset on the west coast before heading back to Las Palmas. Along the way you’ll see wildlife, beaches (white and black sand), dunes, mountains and great cafes and restaurants. Choose a good rental car, and you are set.
There are two hidden gems in Gran Canaria. One is Pico de las Nieves national park area, a stunning pine forest and mountainous place with excellent walks and amazing views. The other is Roque Nublo, which gives the best view of the entire island. It is a 20 minute walk from the road, but provides panoramic views of Gran Canaria. Come up for sunset, but don’t stay too late, as the temperature drops very suddenly here.
Las Palmas itself was great, with a near perfect beach, good bars and a variety of sea food restaurants. Combining all the above tips, you will have a great tip – we guarantee it.
