Katelyn + Michael

We had met Katelyn a month before our wedding (we share the same wedding month!) and we were so grateful to meet another fellow photographer who had such a warm, genuine, and sweet personality. We felt an instant connection with Katelyn and later met her husband, Michael. We frequently meet up with Katelyn + Michael whenever we’re in the Richmond area, it’s so refreshing and encouraging to chat with someone who also knows the wedding industry. We were beyond excited when Katelyn suggested we swap sessions with each other this winter before wedding season started. As most of you know Katelyn isn’t just any photographer – she’s Katelyn James. It is such a wonderful and daunting task to shoot with another great photographer, seeing how they work and how they make the “magic” happen. Additionally, it’s amazing to see how two photographers can be in the same location at the same time, yet take entirely different imagery that represents their own aesthetic and vision.

Katelyn + Michael traveled up to our area for a weekend getaway a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, the rainy weather wasn’t entirely in our favor the day we had scheduled the session, so we waited until the next morning. It’s always a challenge finding beautiful light when you’re shooting mid-day, but we made it work. We are so thankful for the beautiful images Katelyn created for us and we were additionally thankful to shoot her and Michael and their pup, Bokeh!

Winter Solitude – mentor session

We absolutely love mentor sessions and working one-on-one with photographers! We recently had the opportunity to work with Kristyn + John, a lovely couple who are pursuing a photography business (you may also remember them as the bride and groom in our workshop last summer!). This session was focused mainly around shooting and camera techniques. Of course one of the few days this winter we plan a shoot, it snows, which completely transformed the session we originally had planned and let us explore working in a different aesthetic. We asked Becca, a lovely and talented model who is always to easy to work with, to help during our session.

Laura Gordon | mentor session

Last month we had the pleasure of meeting Laura Gordon a photographer in the Richmond area. She had expressed interest in our DVD folios we hand make for our clients and wanted to do a mentor session solely based around folio making. Laura recently did a re-brand of her business and with her re-brand she wanted to re-do all of her packaging, including her DVD presentation. This was actually more of Kurt’s thing, since he is the genius behind all of the folios we give our clients. During the session they discussed materials, tools, time, costs, and vendors; before long we had made a couple of folios, and then we were able to get down to the real work of incorporating her brand to have a folio that is uniquely hers. Well two weeks later we were able to see her folios, and they have turned out amazing – there should be a sneak peek soon on her blog (her clients are going to LOVE it!). We also did some head shots as part of the session. She like many photographers (including Kurt and I) are more comfortable behind the lens than in front of it, but we had such a blast with Laura! We love that she incorporated the colors of her photography brand into her outfit…lots of gold!

The Lady Jane

When my good friend Sara told me she wanted to start up her own antique store, I was beyond ecstatic, as anyone who knows me, knows I’m obsessed with antiques and anything vintage (ahem…our wedding ). I’ve known Sara for several years now, as we attend the same church, she sang at our wedding (Sara has an amazing voice!), and she’s the only one who I can shop with at Anthropologie. She is probably the most stylish person I know…she always wears the most amazing outfits (and shoes!), her blue house is the cutest ever, and she has this knack for finding amazing items at any flea market. I knew this new store would be the perfect fit for her! Sara’s shop, The Lady Jane, isn’t just any antique store, it’s stylish, chic, and super vintage-y with lots of amazing finds…literally guys, the store is SO pretty! Not only that, for those who have asked, Sara will be selling a bunch of our plates and dishes from our wedding at her shop! Any brides trying to find cute things for your wedding, this shop is for you!! The Lady Jane officially opens next Friday, July 1st in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia…make sure you swing by!!

Janie + Steve | Birthday Session

You may recognize Janie, head of the fabulous wedding blog, The Bride’s Cafe. Janie contacted us a couple weeks ago to do a birthday shoot for her and Steve. Of course we couldn’t pass up such an amazing opportunity. Kurt + I had such a blast with Janie + Steve…they have the best smiles and personalities and they rocked the shoot! Janie also runs JMFlora, and creates AMAZING floral arrangements, so she brought along a couple bouquets for us to shoot as well. Janie will be arranging the flowers for our own wedding…seriously, we can’t wait to see the florals…she always creates magic with her arrangements! So, swing by the cafe today and send Janie some birthday love! Enjoy this fabulous couple!

This past week our good friend Josh of Josh Gooden Cinematography invited us for an “Atonement” styled fashion shoot at Swannanoa mansion in Afton, VA…we, of course, couldn’t pass up such an incredible opportunity! Becca, our fabulous model, was absolutely amazing to work with. She is stunning + such a gifted model! When we got on location it was as if we had entered a fairy tale–a mansion constructed in marble, fountains, little stone bridges, a massive tower, + court yards–a dream location for any photographer. We couldn’t have picked a better location for our theme. Who would have thought that this gorgeous mansion is just minutes away from us? Enjoy!

Christina + Bill | San Pedro Session, Part I

We are absolutely thrilled to share this next set of images! We had met Christina + Bill back in November when they were visiting VA. Once we booked our plane tickets to Cali, we scheduled a photo session with them! Christina + Bill are the sweetest, raddest people you’ll ever meet…they are basically rock stars! Christina is absolutely gorgeous + looks like an Anthropologie model, while Bill is hilarious, quirky (in a GOOD way), + just fun to be around. Their personalities are contagious + we LOVED spending the day with them exploring their town of San Pedro. This first part of their session, we went to an old warehouse in town, took some pictures by some dumpsters (sounds soooo attractive, huh?), + finished up in a cute shopping district of San Pedro. Also, I need to mention that Bill is an AMAZING artist. He does a lot of illustrations, so it made sense to incorporate his love for art into the session. You must check out his work, it’s phenomenal! Check out this stylish duo…

Kelly + Elliott | Couple Session

What better way to spend a snow day than to do a photo shoot? This past Saturday VA was hit hard with LOTS of snow, so Kurt + I snapped a couple of shots of my sister + her boyfriend, Elliott. We weren’t out in the snow long, as it was a bit frigid + my makeshift weather gear (zip lock bag) for my camera wasn’t holding up that long. Enjoy some fun shots!

Kristen + Matt | Fashion, Part 2

I’m so thrilled to share these photos!! After Kristen’s head shots, we ventured into a 1920s inspired shoot with her and her husband Matt. Kristen and I had talked before trying to gather ideas for this shoot, but once she mentioned a Model A Ford would be involved I was all in. This shoot is exactly why I LOVE my job…I can’t describe it in words, but I love the creativity that photography allows. Enjoy!
