FAQs

how do you describe your style?

J: I would describe our style as photo-journalistic, modern, and artistic.  We don’t like to pose moments, but try to capture them as candidly and unobtrusively as possible.  We do give some direction for the portraits, but do it in a way that seems natural.  We LOVE LOVE LOVE natural light and will take advantage of it when possible.  Composition is also a huge part of our style.  There is intention to the way we compose our pictures and a lot of the time we love to use space in my photos to create depth.

K: intentional. i love creating space with pictures, using angles, and blurring backgrounds. easy going. i want clients to be relaxed, natural, and have a good time during a shoot. fast paced. i like trying to keep
up with Jodi;  she works quickly to keep things fresh and interesting for both us and clients. we like moving from one spot to another while getting to know our clients so our photos can represent who they are.

where do you find inspiration?

J: I find my photographic inspiration in a multitude of things…from fashion, music, art, films, traveling, and the Lord’s creations.   I’m particularly drawn to fashion (Anthropologie!) and mixing old with new.  I save a lot of my fashion magazines and flip through them for a quick inspiration right before a shoot.

K: im inspired by trying to tell a story through pictures. each couple we meet is different with a different story to tell. the little things that catch my eye make me want to take more photos; the way a couple
interacts, or smiles at each other. its all the details that brings a story together.

favorite things to photograph at weddings?

J: I LOVE my time with the bride and groom.  This moment is so intimate and personal.  It’s one of their few times during the day when they get to spend that one-on-one time together, and it’s so special to observe their interaction, emotions, and beautiful relationship! I also love capturing little details that have gone into weddings…I find them so important and reflective of the bride and groom.

K: the way the bride and groom look at each other, kids dancing, grandparents smiling, candid moments of the wedding party, and the atmosphere of the day. all of these moments are fleeting and you know
as a photographer you only have one chance to get those moments. I love the anticipation and quick pace of a wedding; knowing that i need to be alert, in the right spot, with the right camera settings, at the right time to get the shot.

what did you do before photography?

J: Before photography I was a musician.  I attended James Madison University and received a Bachelors of Music in Oboe Performance.  I thought I was going to play for an orchestra the rest of my life, but realized that wasn’t truly my aspiration.  After college, I taught music for a short time, while dabbling in photography. Though I love playing music, I knew that my passion was in another art form….photography! My father taught me everything I needed to know about photography and to this day most of our conversations revolve around photography.

K: i have always been an artist, though i was never sure of what
medium i wanted to pursue. originally i wanted to work in a restaurant
while i became a painter, though the more i learned as a cook the more
i wanted to become a chef.  while searching through books by great chefs it was the pictures of their cuisine that inspired me. during this time jo and i began to photograph more and it become more of a creative outlet for me.

what do you do when you’re not behind the camera?

J: I do still keep up with my music when I’m not photographing.  I play piano consistently for a local church & oboe for an orchestra a couple of times a year.  Music is still a HUGE part of who I am, especially as a photographer.  Kurt and I love food, as well…we love going out to restaurants and trying different/exotic cuisines.  We also are huge movie buffs.  We especially love Wes Anderson films and foreign films, along with any other movie that gets us into a good discussion. Oh, and we love the Office, which you will find us quoting from time to time :-)

K: love to read classics, watch the “office”, bake bread, churn ice cream, eat at new restaurants, and watch oscar nominated movies, and walk jodi’s dog.

favorite artists?

J: wow…I have too many to list, but my favorites from visual art to music include Vermeer, van Eyck, Brueghel, Michelangelo, Joe Wright (film director), Patty Griffin, Regina Spektor, Weezer, Brahms, Mozart, Puccini.

K: chuck close and vermeer taught me the relationship between Art and Photography, bob dylan let me understand poetry, van gogh showed me how to look at nature, rembrandt and jean-francois millet showed me the world in another light, Salvador dali inspired the unnatural and surreal, thomas keller along with tim turner (food photographer) made me want to cook, thomas keller and michel bras taught me that food can be art.

how did you meet?

J: Kurt and I actually went to the same high school together! We had a lot of mutual friends, but never talked to each other (even though I heard he had a crush on me J).  It wasn’t until my junior year of college that we reconnected.  We kept seeing each other at a church we were both attending at the time.  Kurt pursued me, we dated for about 3 ½ years, and are now engaged and will be married October 2010!

K: well. we went to the same high school, though we never had any classes together. one of our mutual friends would tell me about her and the music she liked, and was then that i started to fall for her. it wasn’t until several years after high school that we really “meet”. i had just left from arizona where i had been doing americorps, and returned home  where jodi was going to college (jmu) and we had bumped
into eachother at several events on campus and once at my parents home church. we starting talking then dating and the rest is history.

Enjoy!
